A. Optrex (Is that what it's called?) eye bathing would be the first thing I'd try. Try talking to your pharmacist, and try not to rub it.

How long do lymph nodes usually stay swollen with pneumonia?
Q. I have had walking pneumonia for about the past two weeks. The cough has gotten substantially better and only comes on and off rarely. However, my lymph nodes seems to be just as swollen as ever. I was wondering how long lymph nodes usually stayed swollen when one has pneumonia. Is it abnormal for them to still be swollen? Should I consult my doctor yet again?

A. During an infection bacteria, viruses, and white blood cells all get filtered through your lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are also the location where your immune system selects the proper white blood cells for the job. Once they are selected they multiply rapidly which is why your lymph nodes swell. Now that you're starting to get over the pneumonia and you're feeling better that doesn't mean that your infection is over. A few more things have to happen: 1) your body has to turn the immune system off to prevent new pneumonia bacteria targeting white blood cells from being produced. 2) your body has to clean up all the dead bacteria and dead white blood cells. Both of those things take time which is why your lymph nodes are still swollen. … [cont.]

Can swollen lymph nodes burst when there is an infection in the body?
Q. My friend has swollen glands around her throat due to a bad tooth infection and is on antibiotics, which doesn't seem to be helping. The glands are still swollen so bad that they hurt to the touch. Is there a possibility that they can burst if too swollen?
Asked by precious_ladee - Thu Oct 16 13:28:49 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if the nodes are swollen of an infection nearby they cannot burst. there's however an infection of the lymph nodes themselves (lymphadenitis) which can - if not treated right (usually with i.v. antibiotics) - lead to abscesses of the lymphnodes and surrounding structures. so in that case they could "burst". you didn't mention how long your friend is taking antibiotics - they do take a little while to work. if your friends symptoms don't get better after 2 or 3 days he/she should consult her doctor again. if the lymph nodes were swollen pretty bad it can take longer than the actual infection to get better.

Is it harmful to have swollen tonsils for long periods of time?
Q. I have had swollen tonsils for a very long time, as in over two years at least. Is it unhealthy or is it alright to have swollen tonsils as long as they don't cause other problems? Doctors please help. There are no bumps, and my tonsils don't seem to be getting bigger. They are just very swollen and the size has stayed persistent. I already have asthma, so I'm not sure if it could cause serious breathing problems in the future..

A. Enlarged tonsils often block the airway causing sleep apnea. If you snore as well, you probably should have a sleep study. I have enlarged tonsils that were not taken out when I was a kid. As an adult the surgical risk and the recovery is difficult. I have to sleep with a machine to make sure my airway stays open. So it is best to see a doctor- an ENT or a sleep specialist. Good luck

What can swollen feet be a sign of in a normal healthy male?
Q. My fiance is a fairly healthy man who is somewhat inactive. He has always had minor foot problems, bone spurs, calouses, dry skin, but recently he has gotten extremely swollen feet! There has been no diet changes or anything and he has had his spleen removed a few years ago due to injury. Can anyone offer any idea as to what may be the problem? He refuses to see a doctor and insurance plays a role in that decision.

A. It sounds like you are sick. Your glands become enlarged by your throat get enlarged first when you are sick. You might want to go to your doctor, you might need an antiboitic.

A. If theres no space on the bar, get it change to a sterile longer one by a piercer right away (don't attempt it yourself!) Embedded piercings are not nice. The worst of the swelling is normally gone after a week. Ibuprofen will help take the edge off it.

What can cause the parotid glands to become swollen and painful?
Q. I am a 32 yr old female if that helps. Last week, I started out with a sore throat and a cough and have been taking antibiotics for five days now and just developed the swollen, painful glands yesterday. One side is so swollen that it hurts to eat. Could this be something to worry about or am I worrying too much?
Asked by Someone - Tue May 6 14:27:28 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If this is really the parotid salivary gland that is swollen you have to consider the mumps, especially if you haven't had them as a child. Other viruses including influenza can also cause parotitis, and bacterial infections, including staph can also involve the parotid gland. Rare conditions causing parotid swelling include salivary stones, tumors, autoimmune inflammations(Sjogrens syndrome), sarcoidosis and reactions to medications(thiazides).

A. Lymph nodes swell up anytime your body is fighting an infection. Is it tender and kind of soft feeling? Do you have any other symptoms either now or recently in the past - did you have a cold, ear ache, sore throat, a cut, toothache, -- all of which can cause a lymph node to swell. You might not even notice any other symptoms but your body could be fighting an infection. If it isn't tender and has been present for a while (not a day), then have your doctor take a look. Nodes that indicate cancer, tend to be painless and present for a while.

A. Yikes. Definitely ice it. Just place the ice right on there and relax for a while. Ice will make the swelling go down and help it heal faster. And although it might look cool for people with black eyes on TV to slap a steak on their injury, that's not a good idea. Who wants raw steak bacteria in their eye? Also, if you think it's not healing or you just want to make sure there was no damage to your eye, you may want to see a doctor, but you probably won't need to. Hope it feels better!

Q. A door slammed on my middle finger and the xray found a hairline fracture on the upper bone (no dislocation). I've been wearing a splint. However 12 days later my finger is just as swollen and and the fingertip just as numb as it was at the start, though the bruises are gone. How long until the numbness and swelling go away? Thanks.

A. I had a hairline fracture on my little finger, the swelling started to go after about 2-3 weeks and the numbness was slightly longer at about 3-4 weeks, although complete finger movement was about 6 weeks all in all.

What could be the cause of a swollen lymph gland right under the middle of the jaw?
Q. This is on a teenager neighbor who has not been immunized against ANYTHING, but there are no outbreaks of anything in our area. His jaw is also slightly swollen and sore. His mom cannot find any explanation online.
Asked by Cris O - Tue Jul 15 16:28:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If this really does involve a lymph node, viral infections are the primary cause. His mother should take him to his doctor for a proper diagnosis. This may not be glandular after all but he just can't be diagnosed online and second-hand at that.

A. RICE R = Rest it I = Ice it C = Compress it E = Elevate it I used to twist and sprain my ankles all the time back when I played softball. This is what my Dr. always told me. Its kinda funny that I could call the office and tell them exactly how it turned when I hurt it and he would tell me which brace to use for the next couple of days... I had a stockpile of those damn things :(

A. I read that you may experience swelling and bruising for a week. (I put the article in the sources if you would like to read. Its a pretty good article about what to expect after your procedure.) Do you have any other signs and symptoms? Fever, drainage? I am pretty sure that by 4 days you should be getting better not worse. You should contact your doctor and tell them what is happening just to be safe. You may have an infection. The article said to contact your doctor if you have any increasing pain, swelling, or fever! I suggest you do that!! Good luck!

How do you calm a mosquito bite that is very swollen with a clear liquid seeping out?
Q. I got a few mosquito bites yesterday and they were just the regular red (small) bumps, but now one of them has swollen to a circle with a two inch diameter with a clear liquid leaking out. Another one has swollen to golf ball size with no liquids coming out. The one with the clear liquid leaking out feels warm and it is red. It also is itchy, and feels like a bruise. I wonder if I got an infection...

A. Stay calm. It could be west Nile, in last year's outbreak, most people who were infected with the West Nile virus had no symptoms or experienced mild illness with fever. In outbreaks in other parts of the world, some persons also developed a mild rash or swollen lymph glands. In some individuals, particularly the elderly, West Nile virus can cause serious disease that affects brain tissue. At its most serious, it can cause permanent neurological damage and can be fatal. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) symptoms include the rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, confusion, loss of consciousness (coma), and muscle weakness. If any of these start happening call your doctor immediately, but the chances of it being west… [cont.]
