Is it harmful to have swollen tonsils for long periods of time?
Q. I have had swollen tonsils for a very long time, as in over two years at least. Is it unhealthy or is it alright to have swollen tonsils as long as they don't cause other problems? Doctors please help. There are no bumps, and my tonsils don't seem to be getting bigger. They are just very swollen and the size has stayed persistent. I already have asthma, so I'm not sure if it could cause serious breathing problems in the future..

A. Enlarged tonsils often block the airway causing sleep apnea. If you snore as well, you probably should have a sleep study. I have enlarged tonsils that were not taken out when I was a kid. As an adult the surgical risk and the recovery is difficult. I have to sleep with a machine to make sure my airway stays open. So it is best to see a doctor- an ENT or a sleep specialist. Good luck

What causes slightly swollen lymph nodes around the neck?
Q. What causes slightly swollen lymph nodes around the neck? I have tested for common viruses particularly HIV. The testing has been over two year with resoundingly negative results. Don't mean to be a hypochondriach, but I think HSV or HPV, which I relatively commonplace, do not mnifest themselves in this manner. Does anyone know what the possible causes might be? Thank you kindly.

A. HI. There are a couple of reasons for inflamed lynph nodes. This normally happens with almost all types of infections because the lympatic system is the gateway to get rid of dead bacteria. There are a couple of reasons why you would have chronic lymphadenopathy. Extra pulmonary TB, some carcinomas, lymhatic carcinomas. There are ways to findout if one of these are the culprits. The doctor should be able to distinguish if the nodes are mobile or non-mobile, if they are soft or hard ( nodular) which could mean a cancer of some sort. He should also be able to do an Incision and drainage which could easily isolate and identify a lot of things by doing a culture and sensitivity. Its also possible if you were a chronic smoker before.

Is a swollen nipple a sign of something going wrong?
Q. My 9 month old dog seems like she is in heat. I haven't seen any signs of her menstruation, but her vulva is swollen as it normally should be if she were in heat. She has one nipple slightly larger than the rest with a red tip. It's a bit smaller than a pea. Is that normal? Should I be worried? I know the nipples of a female dog get swollen around this time, but is one nipple normal? Hope someone can help.

A. Depends, she could have a over productive mamary gland or mamary tumor, you need to see a vet.

How long should I wait to worry about a swollen lymph node?
Q. It's been swollen for a day, i think there is another one but it's much much smaller. How long would a lymph node remain swollen to the point where it's a problem. It's in my neck. Also, if i do go to the doctor, what can i expect to be tested for?
Asked by KJ - Wed Jan 30 18:06:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Lymph nodes swell up anytime your body is fighting an infection. Is it tender and kind of soft feeling? Do you have any other symptoms either now or recently in the past - did you have a cold, ear ache, sore throat, a cut, toothache, -- all of which can cause a lymph node to swell. You might not even notice any other symptoms but your body could be fighting an infection. If it isn't tender and has been present for a while (not a day), then have your doctor take a look. Nodes that indicate cancer, tend to be painless and present for a while.

Can particle board flooring in a mobile home go from swollen back to almost normal?
Q. My father lives in a 1998 mobile home. His air conditioner drain pipe clogged up and water was leaking under the vinyl flooring for quite a while before I noticed the floor was swollen up. His unit has been replaced so there hopefully will be no more leaking water. Now that the particle board is swollen up, must it be replaced with new board or will it ever dry back out and go back down some? How big a deal is this going to be?
Asked by vlschlagal - Sat Jun 21 20:57:51 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. the flooring will not look the same nor will it ever be as strong. It will need to be replaced. Many contractors will splice the sub floor on a joist. this is a poor practice it is better to cut between the joists and glue and screw a 6" wide backer across the joint around the entire perimeter. The original sheets of particle board extend from side to side and are joined over the top of the floor joist with a 4" inch backer full glued and stapled many many times.

What could be the cause of a swollen lymph gland right under the middle of the jaw?
Q. This is on a teenager neighbor who has not been immunized against ANYTHING, but there are no outbreaks of anything in our area. His jaw is also slightly swollen and sore. His mom cannot find any explanation online.
Asked by Cris O - Tue Jul 15 16:28:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If this really does involve a lymph node, viral infections are the primary cause. His mother should take him to his doctor for a proper diagnosis. This may not be glandular after all but he just can't be diagnosed online and second-hand at that.

How long does it take for antibiotics to work on swollen lymph nodes?
Q. I went to Dr because I had a small lump on the back of my neck which he says is a swollen lymph node. He prescribed augmentin (2x per day for 10 days). What are the best shoes to wear for swollen feet?

A. Anything you can get on your foot works. I ended up wearing my mom's size 11 clog style shoes in the end. They were truly ugly but they were the only shoes I could get on that conformed to my work dress code. Before that I wore ballet style shoes, that was until my foot started coming out shaped like them.

A. It could be that his hungry siblings were nursing on him for comfort, and it could be infected. I agree with the other poster, it should be looked at. If it's his rectum that's popping out, he may have a bad case of worms.

What causes swollen lymph nodes in the neck?
Q. I went to my doctor and had an ultrasound done. They found a few swollen lymph nodes in my neck. What ca cause this? Does the infection only have to be neck/throat related? Can bulimia cause this? A. It can be a number of things. Usually when you have lymph nodes in your neck it usually means that you have some type of infection in your body,it is usually dealing with your white blood cells not the red. I know that swollen lymph nodes can come from strep throat, or severe throat infections, it can also come from Mono, HIV, or Aids. If I were you, I would defenitely go to my doctor to get blood work done A.S.A.P., so that they can see what is causing your lymph nodes to be swollen, ignoring the issue will not make it go away and it will certainly not help your health in the long run, it could be something minor that antibiotics can take care of, but if it is something serious not going to check it will defenitely be a health risk for… [cont.]

A. It depends on where you discover these bumps. It could be bed bites, spider bites or some infectious disease. This is something that you need to have medically evaluated as soon as possible. Hope it's nothing serious.@

Q. I keep getting these bumps on my legs. they look like 2-3 mosquito that have swollen up and its red all the way around them. They Itch and burn something terrible but only last an hour or so before disappearing. I think it may be an allergic reaction but from what i've read that usually causes hives. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it may be?
