Swelling??!!!?
Q. I am 39 weeks pregnant and since yesterday I noticed my ankles were swollen, not sure when swelling began, swollen as in my calves and ankles looked like one :( Now this morning I have noticed that there is currently only swelling in my ankles (calves & ankles not one yet) its real watery feeling when I poke it and now i've noticed there are spider veins only where the swelling is. Is this normal for 39 weeks??? FYI I am of average height and weight and have gained 32lbs in pregnancy. Entire pregnancy has been "normal" no complications.

A. Swelling in the last trimester is normal, however you do want to let your dr know about it...especially if your face and hands start to swell or the swelling gets worse, you start to get headaches, blurred vision, nausea etc as these are signs of Toximia/ Pre-Eclampsia which is dangerous. Put your feet up as often as possible. Drink lots of water...sip it don't gulp. Gulping will flush your kidneys and not help with hydration. Use pillow under your side when laying down, don't lie flat on your back. Wear comfortable flat heeled shoes.

What causes leg swelling and how to treat it?
Q. I recently spent 2 weeks in the hospital and my legs have swollen to twice their size. I'm thinking it was something about being in the hospital, but now that I'm home the swelling won't go down and now they've started to hurt. I keep them elevated above my heart as much as I can, but the swelling just isn't going down fast enough.
Asked by Gail - Wed Dec 9 12:17:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A wide range of factors varying greatly in seriousness can cause leg swelling. Some generalizations about causes can be made based on features of leg swelling and additional signs or symptoms you may have. These generalizations aren't, however, a substitute for a doctor's exam. Generalizations that may help in determining the cause of leg swelling include the following: * Swelling in only one leg is more likely related to a condition in that leg alone, rather than involving distant organs, such as the heart or kidneys. * Swelling in both legs is more likely caused by a condition not directly related to the legs, such as prolonged standing or sitting, or by a condition that more widely affects the whole body, such as a drug side… [cont.]

How much swelling from a tongue piercing is normal?
Q. This is the beginning of the third day that I've had my tongue pierced. They did it at an angle and left less room for swelling than normal. I've noticed past couple of days that the top ball is digging into my tongue and making quite an indent. Does it sound like it still has potential to be a healthy piercing a week from now as long as I keep it clean? From what I understand, the 2-3rd day is the peak of a tongue piercing's swelling.
Asked by electromglol - Tue Feb 12 15:43:25 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. anwall10's info is not correct. Tongue piercings swell up to two weeks, it's completely normal. Rejection is VERY rare in tongue piercings. They're super easy to heal, and it takes a lot to mess them up. They pierce at an angle to accomodate for your anatomy (not hitting your teeth, gums, or tongue web). It doesn't affect swelling, OR risk of infection. Any good piercer will do this to protect your teeth and gums. It's normal to have your tongue swell to the point where you do not see any extra barbell- just the balls. You will need to be changed to a longer barbell if the top ball literally begins to sink into the piercing's hole... getting embedded. If this happens, you'll just get changed to a longer barbell by your piercer,… [cont.]

How much swelling is normal after getting wisdom teeth pulled?
Q. I just got all four of my wisdom teeth out on Friday (it's now Sunday), and I look like a chipmunk, and it's hard to open my mouth. I was wondering how much swelling is normal after that kind of procedure. I don't want to call the dentist freaking out if it's nothing, but I also am very, very, VERY uncomfortable. And if it is normal, is there any way that I can make the swelling go down faster?
Asked by theymakefoolsofus. - Sun Jan 24 17:31:53 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The pain and swelling reaches its maximum on the 3rd post op day. Then barring any complications lie a dry socket or infection, things should gradually improve on a day to day basis. The swelling should be totally gone i 10 - 14 days. good luck.

How to rid of swelling caused by sunburn?
Q. So I'm at the beach. It's only our third day here and my sunburn is so bad on my face that my bottom lip swelled to twice it's size. Also, under my eyes are swollen. We're not going to the beach today, thank god no more sunburn. But how do I bring this swelling down? Thanks in advance!
Asked by tnhbkdd - Tue Jul 13 09:55:45 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. wow that sounds bad. take aleve asap. also, apply a hydrocortisone cream. it will help the swelling go down. don't put this on your lips though. try using cold compresses too, by taking a towel, soaking it in cold water, and then pressing it against the burned skin. applying aloe vera gel can help too, if the burn is painful. more importantly, you have to make sure to cover up before you go to the beach again. if your already sunburned skin gets burned worse, you could get really sick. so take a few days off from the beach. your skin will appreciate having time to heal.

How do you get the swelling to go down on a sebaceos cyst?
Q. I have a sebaceous cyst on my neck that seems to be irritated because it has swollen. Its not really paiful, just larger than normal. The dr. doesnt want to remove it because its right near a major artery, so its something I just have to deal with. Something irritated it, now its swollen. I cant find any remedies to make the swelling go down. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Asked by jeff c - Tue Sep 23 14:38:32 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If your doctor is concerned about the artery, he/she could do an I & D (incision & drainage), inject corticosteroids into the cyst or even do a minimal excision. There are other means of dealing with this beside total excision. As for what you yourself can do at home, you can apply warm, moist washcloths to the cyst for 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day. You can reheat the cloth in the microwave but be sure to keep it damp. Or, if you prefer, you can also use a hot water bottle or heating pad over a damp towel. The heat and moisture can be soothing and will increase blood circulation to the area, and speed healing. It can also bring a cyst caused by infection to a head although it may take 5 to 7 days. If it drains pus, cover it… [cont.]

Q. I've had my braces for a year and some months now and my gums are swelling. My back teeth are starting to look smaller so how can i reduce the swelling?? A. Be sure to brush the gums as well as the teeth. Rinse with mouthwash. Massage the gums with a toothbrush, you can do this when you are reading or watching tv. You don't need water or toothbrush, just massage. This really sounds like a hygiene issue. The gums swell up around the brackets when the plaque isn't being removed. Sorry...

A. If there has been no improvemment in this injury in 2 weeks, there should be no doubt in your mind that it is fairly serious & the dog needs to see a vet. Please do what you need to do to get your dog some veterinary care. Crate rest & leash walking to potty only.

How do you reduce redness and swelling after taking out a piercing?
Q. I took out my monroe piercing today and want it to close up and heal without any infection. Because the piercing was so tight, I had to apply a little bit of pressure and play around with it a bit in order for it to come off leaving the area sore, red, and swollen. Q. I took out my monroe piercing today and want it to close up and heal without any infection. Because the piercing was so tight, I had to apply a little bit of pressure and play around with it a bit in order for it to come off leaving the area sore, red, and swollen. Any tips on how to get rid of the redness and swelling because it looks like a large zit on my face. Is Polysporin ok to apply around the area? Thanks.

How long could swelling last with hsv encephalitis?
Q. We recently had a prognosis of hsv encephalitis. Still hospitalized and on day 14 of Acyclovior, clinically showing improvment. We have had several MRIs and EEG, seems like the EEGs are getting somewhat better, but the MRI still shows no change. How long could we expect swelling to remain?

A. There is no answer. every case is entirely indiviual. I've seen one case where the patient was copmpletely better in a week. And other cases where the person never came out of a coma. I have one case in the hospital right now - it's been one week, and no useful movement. Best advice - wait one month - expect that by one month you'll have about 90% of the recovery that will ever occur. It's just a waiting game - there is no way for anyone to tell you when the patient is going to get better - or IF he's going to get better.
