A. super ouch !!! Hardly anything more painfull !!! The reason is that finger, and toe injuries cause the selling to be "compartmentalized"...it' s trapped into small spaces that don't allow the pressure from swelling to be released/dissipated to any other space. R.I.C.E (except compression)is the imperative. Because of the swelling , elevation is critical. Keep in mind that every time that you put your foot down, it takes about three times longer to reduce the swelling caused by lowering your foot. Of course, an anti-inflammatory will help if you take them mutilpe time a day for 3-4 days (use the daily maximum recommended dose ...anything less is likely to be insufficient. "Splinting" of the toe is often used but has a variable results… [cont.]

Is there a way to tell the difference between a broken toe and a jammed toe?
Q. I twisted my little toe in a pretty bizarre fashion this afternoon. I didn't really twist it with too much pressure, but I've broken it before, so the bone is a little weaker. Is there a way to tell the difference between a jam and a break? If so, would I treat one injury different than the other? I know i'm only supposed to buddy splint it if it's broken, but should I do something else if it's a jam?

A. yes, there is a way to tell the difference, get it XRAYED ! then you can see if it is broken or not

I jammed my toe into a brick walkway on Friday and the nail came off today. What do I do now?
Q. On Friday 8/21 I jammed my middle toe into a brick walk way and the nail was like half off until today when it fell off in the shower. I used denfectant and neosporin. It hurts like hell. What should I do? Should I cover it? Should I put it in a splint?

A. You should keep it covered up (with some sort of bandage) to avoid infection. Then you just have to wait until it grows back

Will I be able to run track with a jammed/broken toe?
Q. Just a few minutes ago I dropped this huge metal thing on my big toe, and then walked into the wall on accident. I have a track meet Saturday, will I be able to run? Right now it is really red and swollen, is it broke or jammed? Thanks

A. call the doc, see what they want you to do. if they say no, don't because it could get worse. i know how it feels to not be able to participate in what you want to do because of an injury. i had surgery about 2 months ago and had to sit out for 3 weeks of basketball and soccer. it killed me not to play, but soon i was back on the field/court. you really need to see what the doc has to say and follow it. plus u would probable only be out for about 4 days to a week.

How do I know if my toe is jammed, broken, or sprained?
Q. On Saturday I was playing soccer and in my game I went for the ball and kicked the ball and afterwards my foot followed up and hit the person behind the balls shin/ankle with my toe area. The first day it swelled up pretty big and hurt when I move it and stuff and was bruised a little. But when I woke up today the swelling has reduced. So please tell me what you think is wrong with my foot and how I can speed up this recovery.

A. Sounds like a sprain - but broken toes are hard to diagnose. If you go to the doctor, they can't really put a cast on or anything, but it's still a good idea to get it checked out if you're worried. As for speeding recovery, use the RICE regimen: Rest - stay off the toe as much as you can. Don't practice for a few days. Ice - Use frozen veggies or an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel and apply it to the toe for no more than 10 minutes at a time several times a day. Compression - Use an ACE bandage to wrap the toe(s). This and the ice will help to bring down swelling and heal you quicker. Elevation - When you're just sitting around for the first few days of the injury, try to put your affected foot up. Above heart level is best if… [cont.]

Jammed my big toe and I have dance tomorrow?
Q. Ok so I jammed my big toe today just fooling around with some friends and it got really swollen and it kiiills to walk on. Long story short, I have dance classes tomorrow and the say after that and I really don't want to miss them. I've been icing it and I taped it to the toe next to it but what else can I do to help it? Do i sleep with it taped to the toe next to it? Would an advil help it if i take it before dance? thanks!!
Asked by ADDiiCTED_2_dance - Sun Jul 12 23:14:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yikes! Doesn't sound good! I've broken my toe and had to dance on it, so I'm hoping to be helpful :] Yes, sleep with the tape on! Always leave it on! Keep icing and such, elevate, I think you know the drill. Also, it helps so much to take an Advil or Tylenol or something to really take the edge off of the pain. I don't know what kind of dance you do, but if you do pointe pad it extremely extremely well with lambs wool. Also, baby it, meaning don't do something that would make it worse. Try to keep of it until your class, and don't do anything too extreme while you are there. Good luck, hope it heals fast :]

What do you do if you have a jammed toe?
Q. I think I jammed it I can walk if I walk on the side of my foot which is hard at school so what do I do
Asked by Kat - Tue Aug 22 16:23:46 2006 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you can't walk on it, you may have broken the bone or damaged cartilige. Elevate the foot and ice (20 minutes on, 20 off (keep it wrapped in a towel)). Ibuprofen or tylenol for the pain and make an appointment with the doctor. Whether jammed or broken, there is usually very little that can be done to splint a toe other than to pad it with cotton balls or gauze and then tape it to another toe to stabilize it. Don't wear tight shoes for a while. Try a sneaker with loose laces and plenty of "wiggle room" in the toe area so there isn't a lot of pressure placed on the injured toes by the shoe.

Jammed toe help meeeeeee?
Q. I jammed my toe about 3 months ago it was not broken, I could bend it and walk fine but it seems like everytime I play volleyball their is still a pain when I jump. Also, when someone steps on it or I bend it in a certain way it hurts. It is really weird because I function fine really it is just uncomfortable...any suggestions or home remedies for a jammed toe that has been jammed for 3 months/??

A. You can try icing it to see if that helps. Sometimes a bruise can occur on the inside although there are no visible signs, but I would recommend getting back in touch with your doctor to let them know what's going on before trying it. I would also recommend letting your mom know what's going on (if under age).

Symptoms of a broken/jammed toe?
Q. About 5 hours ago I got kicked in the toe without shoes on and within 15 min of the incident it swelled twice the size. Every time I try to move it, it feels like a pin just went through it. The only thing whats weird is its not black and blue, its just normal color. Is it jammed or broken? How can I tend to it? Thanks
Asked by $!Dude!$ - Thu Feb 18 00:00:22 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It might start swelling up just because its not black or blue doesn't mean its not broken. If you can't move it get it x-rayed. Its better to be safe than sorry.

I jammed my toe nail 3 weeks ago and it bruised but about a week ago it began to bleed and it still is. Help!?
Q. Initially it did hurt but the pain faded, but about a week ago it began to bleed from the side of my toe nail, it's a slow flow of blood, at first it was dark red (almost brown) blood, but now a week after the initial bleeding began the blood is a brighter red. Any ideas?
Asked by Andrea - Sun Aug 9 01:39:46 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. bruising is just accumlation of blood from broken capillaries...the brown blood that you saw was old accumulated blood. The new blood is an attempt to clot...and just keeps getting interrupted. Just allow your body to take care of itself, as it knows exactly what to do...just leave toe alone, don't push on it or pick at it...

Jammed Toe? Broken Toe? What happened? ?
Q. Situation: I was running through the house with my two English Springer Spaniel dogs when one got in the way and I ended up slamming my toe into the leg of a chair. It was the right foot, and the toe next to the big toe. Pain: The pain is right at the knuckle where the toe meets my foot. Its hurts without standing on it or any other kind of pressure. Needless to say it hurts more with pressure. Now, I doubt its broken cause I can bend it. But theres still a lot of pain. So I think its jammed but not sure. What exactly does a jammed toe consist of. Junk part: NO health insurance right now... looking into it and I don't need a lecture on the importance of health insurance...I already know.

swollen "jammed toe"
Q. on my 1.5 year old shar pei pup. vet says that its just jammed, but he is limping and refuses to put any weight on that whole leg. Is there anything i can do to make him more comfortable? I just feel bad. we originally thought the toe was broken, but the vet this morning assured me that its not broken just maybe "jammed"

A. I'm surprised your vet didn't suggest something when you took him in. The advice would be the same as for a person. Rest, ice, elevation.

I think i dislocated my toe, or maybe jammed it?
Q. about a week ago i was kick-boxing a large korean and i think i jammed my toe really bad. there was quite a bit of bruising at first, but now the bruising is gone and it feels like when you need to pop your toe and it kinda hurts, but after you pop it it feels better. should i just go ahead and push really hard and pop it, or what? i dont have health insurance, so a doctor is kinda out of the question. what do you think?
Asked by martini_pink09 - Sun Sep 30 05:31:02 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you jammed the toe, the joint should have decompressed itself by now. When you "pop" a joint, all you are really doing is forcing the joint fluid to rapidly concentrate on one side or the other and the process produces the sound you associate with cracking the knuckles. While it doesn't necessarily hurt anything, it doesn't help anything either. The bruising suggests you ruptured the main blood supply to that toe, and probably did injure the joint as well. It still hurts because it's still healing, and it probably won't much appreciate you manipulating it in any manner. Just buddy tape it to the next door neighbor and leave it be in peace. It will heal much better and quicker without your assistance. There's not a lot you can do… [cont.]

A. There isn't really a way of telling whether you've broken your toe or not. But by the sounds of it, you probably have broken it. It's like braking your arm, if you cant move it, or walk on it, or straighten it, then it's broken. I broke my toe a few years ago and couldn't walk, and was in the same situation as you are. My advice is go get it x-rayed. Hope this is of help

Is my big toe jammed or broken?
Q. Last night I was playing ultimate frisbee and came down on my left big toe pretty badly. I was running at full speed, took a huge jump, and when i landed my big toe hit first and snapped under my foot while all 135 lbs. of me came down on it. Its pretty swollen and purple at the joint and I cant put any pressure on it at all. Im in pain even when im not limping around and I cant move the toe up at all and only a hair down. Is it broken or jammed? PS Please dont tell me to go to the doctor cause i know thats the last resort. What's a doctor going to do anyways?
Asked by Corey P - Tue Jun 9 17:37:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It sounds broken. Don't worry, it's not that serious. You just need to rest your foot for about a week. If it is not feeling any better after 10 days, it is time to see a doctor. Good luck !
