A. super ouch !!! Hardly anything more painfull !!! The reason is that finger, and toe injuries cause the selling to be "compartmentalized"...it' s trapped into small spaces that don't allow the pressure from swelling to be released/dissipated to any other space. R.I.C.E (except compression)is the imperative. Because of the swelling , elevation is critical. Keep in mind that every time that you put your foot down, it takes about three times longer to reduce the swelling caused by lowering your foot. Of course, an anti-inflammatory will help if you take them mutilpe time a day for 3-4 days (use the daily maximum recommended dose ...anything less is likely to be insufficient. "Splinting" of the toe is often used but has a variable results… [cont.]

Is there a way to tell the difference between a broken toe and a jammed toe?
Q. I twisted my little toe in a pretty bizarre fashion this afternoon. I didn't really twist it with too much pressure, but I've broken it before, so the bone is a little weaker. Is there a way to tell the difference between a jam and a break? If so, would I treat one injury different than the other? I know i'm only supposed to buddy splint it if it's broken, but should I do something else if it's a jam?

A. yes, there is a way to tell the difference, get it XRAYED ! then you can see if it is broken or not

A. You may have broken it. Tape it to the toe beside it and it should feel better in a couple days.

What should I do about a "jammed" toe?
Q. My son the 3 years old & I think he jammed his toe when he fell down. It isn't swollen or a different color but he keeps saying it hurts really bad. I moved it up & down & back & forth & he didn't scream like it was broken, so I'm pretty sure it is jammed. I was wondering if there is anything I could do to fix it myself, before I go sit at ER all day just for them to tell me its jammed.
Asked by 85Jessica - Sun Sep 14 10:00:00 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is something you can do. Tylenol and Ibuprofen for pain. Ice for the 1st 24 hours, and buddy tape the toes. Buddy taping is taping the affected toe to the toe next to it. This helps to stabilize the toe. Don't pull on it. Many people make this mistake thinking it will make it better. Unless it is the big toe, ER's rarely cast a foot or even xray a toe. Ice application should be as follows, never apply ice or ice pack directly to the skin, use a wash cloth or towel between the ice and the skin, apply the ice for 20 minutes, then remove it for 2 hours before reapplying. Ice for the 1st 24 hours, then switch to heat. If pain persists more than a few days, see your doctor. Hope this helps.

Will I be able to run track with a jammed/broken toe?
Q. Just a few minutes ago I dropped this huge metal thing on my big toe, and then walked into the wall on accident. I have a track meet Saturday, will I be able to run? Right now it is really red and swollen, is it broke or jammed? Thanks

A. call the doc, see what they want you to do. if they say no, don't because it could get worse. i know how it feels to not be able to participate in what you want to do because of an injury. i had surgery about 2 months ago and had to sit out for 3 weeks of basketball and soccer. it killed me not to play, but soon i was back on the field/court. you really need to see what the doc has to say and follow it. plus u would probable only be out for about 4 days to a week.

I jammed my toe about 3 months ago and it has not heeled yet, do I need to see a doctor?
Q. My toe is swollen and bruised and hurts when I touch it. Is there something I can do at my house to make it heal, or should I see a doctor?
Asked by Rose - Sun Feb 11 17:59:28 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If it hasn't healed yet, as in you are still having pain, you should go see a doctor. You may have developed some sort of calcium deposit that is affecting the tissue in the area and causing you pain. Generally it would have healed up within about 6 weeks unless you keep re-injuring it. For peace of mind, you should see your family doctor. They can do an X-ray and some other non-painful tests and see what is going on with it. It's also possible you developed some inflammation in your joint or bone as a result of hurting it. They can give you meds to help with that. Good luck!

How to know if your toe is broken, jammed, dislocated, or sprained?
Q. I was in my garage&then i stubbed my toe on the table. Like, it scraped my toe from above, and it hurts if you put any pressure on it. I've put ice and a warm wash cloth on it. I took my temperature 3 hours after the stubbing, and it was 100.5. So.. what does it sound like?

A. If you're really worried, go to the doctor and get an x-ray. You never know, it might just be a huge coincidence and you stubbed your toe and have the flu or something.

Symptoms of a broken/jammed toe?
Q. About 5 hours ago I got kicked in the toe without shoes on and within 15 min of the incident it swelled twice the size. Every time I try to move it, it feels like a pin just went through it. The only thing whats weird is its not black and blue, its just normal color. Is it jammed or broken? How can I tend to it? Thanks
Asked by $!Dude!$ - Thu Feb 18 00:00:22 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It might start swelling up just because its not black or blue doesn't mean its not broken. If you can't move it get it x-rayed. Its better to be safe than sorry.

A. This happened to me like a few years ago you could have broken your toe and it didn't reset right but for me i just let it be and tried not to kick the ball anywhere near my big toe. if you give it a little time to rest and don't smash it again (at least for a while:) you should be okay enless something major happens like you drop something on it good luck :P

How can you tell if your toe is just jammed or if it's broken?
Q. I stubbed my second toe, and now I can't bend it. The first "knuckle" is really sore. No bruising or swelling yet. I've broken toes before, and they usually swell right away...
Asked by I'm just me - Mon Nov 9 13:37:03 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Tons of swelling, probably would turn green or purple with bruises. You wouldn't be able to bend it at all. Hope this helps. Just sprained my ankle... injuries like sprains suck. Goodluck getting better!

A. You definitely need to have a good Doctor take a look at this. Its been far too long without healing. It can be any number of things from a poorly set break, to arthritis invading the joint. See a Doctor or go to a Clinic or Hospital. Its too late for ice to help, but apply mild heat, 20 minutes on then 20 minutes off, for temporary relief. Take care.

Jammed toe, finger, scrapped palms?
Q. One month ago, I scrapped my palms and jammed my finger playing basketball. The wounds on my palms have healed so my hands look perfectly fine but the pain in my palms still persists and also my jammed finger as well. About six months ago I jammed my big toe playing basketball as well. Like my palms and finger, it has not healed as well. So my questions are...why haven't I healed yet? Is there something I can do to heal it now even though it's a little late? Is there something wrong with me? What can I do? I'm pretty frustrated.
Asked by frustrated - Sat Jun 21 05:38:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The above person is right in that you do need to try and rest your injuries as much as possible. However, you also need to protect them, especially if you're still using them. You need to try and find something that will support your hands and toes, even if it's just a soft brace, it's better than nothing. I wouldn't push yourself beyond what you're body is telling you is okay. You may cause permanant damage. The fact that you haven't healed means it never ever healed internally. If you want it to clear up once and for all then as hard as it may be you have to rest them, or you'll be like this another 6 months down the line. Ice will also help with inflammation, as will Ibuprofen.
