A. For a jammed thumb, take your other hand and with your thumb right under the thumb in the bid fleshy part, push in hard there and hold tight, while at the same time pulling your fingers up on the bottom side Hold for 30 seconds and then open thumb all the way, release the pressure and hold open for one minute.

How can I heal a jammed thumb?
Q. I was talking to my parents today about my thumb that I injured (not sure how) and they told me it sounds a lot like I jammed it. Well, it's hurting really bad and I don't want to be in pain for all of spring break... So I need to know if there is anyway to help it heal?
Asked by Nadare - Fri Apr 10 17:23:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. See your health care provider as soon as possible. Smashing fingers in car doors or desk drawers, or with hammers or baseballs, is all too common. If the injury involves only the end segment of the finger (the terminal phalanx) and doesn't involve a significant cut, the help of a doctor is seldom needed. Blood under the fingernail (subungual hematoma) is a painful problem that you can treat. If the injury doesn't involve other parts of the finger and if the finger can be moved easily, apply an ice pack for swelling and use acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for pain. And good luck.

What should I do about my jammed thumb?
Q. My thumb recentley got jammed by a football and hurts pretty bad. Theres some swelling below the thumb on the palm and hurts to bend completely or move to some extent. I seariousley doubt it's broken. What should I do to help heal this. Is it true that I should have someone yank the finger back out?
Asked by jwildmanbamf - Thu Aug 6 21:21:03 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Don't "yank the finger back out." You could injure your finger even more. It's never a good idea to force an injury in or out unless your trained. Ice your hand for 15 minutes, and take it off for 20. Repeat three times. Ice it for the next few days. Also, rest your hand for a day. It will help the swelling go down and speed the healing process. It's probably nicely bruised, but nothing major. If the pain really gets to you, try 1 or 2 ibuprofen.

A. Time is the only thing that will heal it. Time and not re-injuring it that is. Thumbs are pretty tricky to wrap without it looking like you got shot in the hand. I would use 2 1/2 inch ACE wrap, start a few wraps around the thumb and then across the palm of your hand. Alternate a few wraps around the thumb and palm and finish with a few turns around your wrist to anchor the whole thing and keep the bandage from slipping off your hand. Check your thumb and fingers afterward to make sure it's not too tight. If your fingertips are cool and purple, you need to unwrap it and start over. Even a really good wrap on a thumb doesn't do a whole lot to protect and stabilize it, just a pretty good reminder not to use it a whole lot. If you… [cont.]

How to wrap a jammed thumb?
Q. I jammed my thumb fairly badly a week and a half ago, playing wallyball, and it still hurts. Where it hurts is at the base of the thumb where the thumb meets the palm. Because of the location, I am confused on how to wrap/tape the thumb to avoid further strain or injury during play (especially). Thanks for serious answers.

A. tounge depressor (you can buy them at a pharmacy store), wrap it 3-5 times with medical tape after lying the tounge depressor on the back of your thumb. also, you may know that there are metal splints especaily made for this. they are metal w/ a blue spongy material on the inside, also comes with a wrap. hope you get better soon!

what to do with my jammed thumb?
Q. During my wrestling practice, i took a shot (takedown) and smashed my thumb straight into the kids knee really hard. I've jammed it about 3 times in the last year too. It immediatly swelled and i got ice and sat out for the rest of practice, i also didnt wrestle today in practice. I have a limited range of motion and it hurts to do certain things. It's not extreme pain so i don't know if its broken? Should i just keep icing it, or should i see a doctor?
Asked by Andrew - Sat Nov 28 21:48:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Icing it will help to reduce the inflammation. If you want to do something regard the pain, try submerging your hand in really warm water. Your finger should improve in a few days, but if the pain gets worse (or if you think you are not recovering at all) you should definitely see a doctor and get an X-ray. You want to make sure that none of the ligaments holding your thumb together have been substantially damaged. Good luck.

I have a jammed thumb and a bruised palm. Do i need medical attention?
Q. Ok i was playing volleyball and i went to set a really hard serve and i hit the ball with only my thumbs and jammed both of them. My right one took most of the impact. it hurt for the first day or 2 but it brused my palm right under the thumb. My teacher said the reason why it bruised is because i broke a blood vesal in my thumb and its draining down to my palm. I dont have medical so i can go to a doctor and i'm worried that its infected from the inside. Please help

Sprained/jammed thumb?
Q. Today I jammed/sprained my thumb at football practice. I'm practicing RICE and I read that you ice 20 min on and 20 min off for the first 48 hours. Then I read that you ice for 20 min 4 times a day for several days. Which Icing method is more efficient/correct? And at night should I use a splint and wrap with an ace bandage before I go to bed? Thanks!!! I've iced a few times already. The swelling has gone down from being really swollen and not being able to be bent to being able to bend a little bit. Pain isn't really too much of an issue.

Do i have a torn ligament in my thumb, is it broken, or is it just severely jammed?
Q. I was playing basketball the other day and i went up for a rebound and with my mad hops i hit my thumb right up against the rim straight on it. It hurt pretty bad so i took a break and then went back to play another game like an hour later. That night it was a little swollen at the base of the thumb and it hurt the base of the thumb when i moved it. The next day however, the swelling and bruising went down and i can move my thumb around pretty well but it hurts when i try and bring my thumb across my hand at the base of the thumb, for example holding up the number 4 with your hand. I am guessing it's just a jammed thumb but i've never jammed my thumb so i want to make sure, i usually jam my other fingers. Thanks.

A. Doesn't sound broken. if it were broken, you would know it. Believe me, I broke my thumb before and the pain was worse than what your describing. Most likely, its jammed. But if you want to make sure, give your doctor a call.
