How can I heal a jammed thumb?
Q. I was talking to my parents today about my thumb that I injured (not sure how) and they told me it sounds a lot like I jammed it. Well, it's hurting really bad and I don't want to be in pain for all of spring break... So I need to know if there is anyway to help it heal?
Asked by Nadare - Fri Apr 10 17:23:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. See your health care provider as soon as possible. Smashing fingers in car doors or desk drawers, or with hammers or baseballs, is all too common. If the injury involves only the end segment of the finger (the terminal phalanx) and doesn't involve a significant cut, the help of a doctor is seldom needed. Blood under the fingernail (subungual hematoma) is a painful problem that you can treat. If the injury doesn't involve other parts of the finger and if the finger can be moved easily, apply an ice pack for swelling and use acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen for pain. And good luck.

How Do I Heal My Jammed Thumb ?
Q. A Couple Of Months Ago I Jammed My Finger Playing Volleyball. I Iced It For Awhile But That Didn't Seem To Help. Now My Thumb Still Hurts Every Now And Then. Help Please !

A. You didn't say exactly where it hurts but I'll try to figure it out. If you hurt it along the base of the thumb near the wrist then you could have a Bennet's fracture which needs to be treated in a cast if of course the fracture hasn't displaced. If it's a Rolando fracture along the base of your thumb then that definitely needs to be casted because the joint surface is totally messed up. Usually they put pins across it. If you broke it along the wrist at the base of the thumb then it could be a Scaphoid fracture and that needs to be casted for about three months or until it heals. They are a problem because the bone doesn't have a good blood supply so it can take forever to heal; sometimes take over six months to heal. If you tore… [cont.]

How can i tell if my thumb is broken or jammed?
Q. Its only a little blue, and i can bend it a little, but it hurts reallly bad. i don't want to go to the doctor, cause i'm not made of money. it got jammed when i was playing softball... what can i do to make it heal faster, and what are the signs of a broken thumb??? also.. it's swelled up A LOTTT like, 3 times bigger than my other one

A. Sounds like it's jammed. You'll probably want to bandage it, and eventually, when you can, have a doctor look at it. Don't move it, it will heal in around 6 weeks. Don't do any softball or other sport during that time.

Jammed thumb... pain after over a year.?
Q. So a little over a year ago, i jammed my thumb backwards while playing basketball. In a span of a month, i jammed 3 more times. Now after a year, i feel pain whenever i squeeze the socket area of my thumb. Also when i twirl the thumb, i notice that it gets tight and tired whereas my other thumb does not. Whats wrong?
Asked by OMGilovecheesetoo! - Thu Mar 11 20:29:11 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Could also be nerve damage. Tell a doctor. It'll only get worse if something isn't done.

A. It means that everything in your thumb is smashed together with can cause you to over extend the tendons and ligaments in it.
