How long does it take for a jammed finger to heal?
Q. About three months ago, I jammed a finger by trying to catch a bouncing spare-tire and it still hurts. Plus, it is easily reinjured. I can really feel it when "barring" strings on my guitar.

A. Im not sure but its does take a long time. I jammed my finger when a kid playing basketball and it was literally blue and stayed that way for a while. You would swear it was broken

How to bring down jammed finger swelling?

A. I jammed my finger playing basketball , i got this thing that's sort of like a cast for my finger, and it turned out that my finger was sprained. i got the same symptoms that you got. My finger started swelling up, and started to get purple. but if it's just jammed that put lots of ice on it.

How to tell if there is muscle damage in jammed finger?
Q. about 2 weeks ago I jammed my pinky finger playing basketball, the day after it swelled up really big and turned purple. Now it is still pretty big around the joint compared to other finger and still pretty sore... I was just wondering if it is muscle or ligament damage cause im sure its not broken
Asked by Mark S - Thu Jan 8 18:26:20 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A jammed finger is also known as a dislocated finger, and the bone or joint coming out of place could have injured the elements surrounding it as it dislocated. I would make an appointment with an Orthopedic Doctor and have it X-Rayed. Swelling after 2 weeks could be the sign of more serious damage.

Why do I get pain in my finger that I jammed a long time ago?
Q. I jammed my finger playing football many years ago and now at 46, I get pain in the joint from time to time. I heard that athletes with jammed fingers usually end up getting arthritis in the damaged joints. Is this true? Have this happened to you or someone you know?
Asked by G_Y_IT_42 - Mon Feb 16 11:54:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, it's arthritis. When you have an injury to a joint you'll get a calcium build up around that joint which is causing your pain. You body can sense the differences in atmospheric pressure which is why it may hurt worse when the weather is bad. Joints expand and decrease just the way wood does in cold or hot weather too.

Do i have a Broken finger or a Jammed finger?
Q. I jammed my finger in basketball a few days ago and it still hurts today and yesterday i was crying and screaming because it hurt so much but do jammed fingers last for 3 days cuz my finger still hurts a lot and ice wont help it so what should i do for my finger and is it broken or sprained or just jammed?
Asked by aznbluet - Thu Oct 30 00:17:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Get one of those finger braces at your local drugstore and bandage it to another finger and leave it there for a few days or weeks. Ice will only help the swelling go down. Take aspirin to relieve the pain and the swelling. If it's broken then you should feel a sharp shooting pain every few seconds. Use this method and if this persists then go ahead and have your school nurse (if your in school) check it out or go to the local pharmacy (at the drugstore) and see what they have to say. Good luck.

Jammed finger - Is it necessary to go to the doctor?
Q. I hurt my index finger playing football...I don't think it is broken because it is not really that painful. The finger is swollen and stiff but I can bend it a little so my family thinks it is just jammed. The joints are swollen and and the top joint is looking a little blue, which is slightly concerning me. My family doesn't want me to go to the doctor b/c my insurance situation is a bit screwy right now... So I'm wondering how long it should take to start healing and what I should do for it? Or if jammed fingers should really be treated by a professional?

A. Usually, when someone goes to the doctor for a hurt finger or toe, they can't do much. If it is severe sometimes they will put you in a cast, but this doesn't sound like you need one. Between my two brothers and I we have broken a lot of fingers and toes. We usually just go to the local drug store and get a splint and some medical tape and secure it that way. You should ice it and definitely not be using it. If it doesn't start to look better in about a week I would suggest a possible doctor's visit, otherwise good luck!

What is the best thing to do for a jammed pinky finger?
Q. My son jammed his pinky finger, and it is causing him some pain. We iced it and gave him some Advil, and that helped. But, he has four baseball games this week, and would like to be able to play. Do you think this injury will hurt his game? He is a great player, one of the best on his team, and is worried that he will not be able to play up to his potential this week. Do you have any good ideas to speed up the healing process? Thanks in advance for your answers.

A. "RICE" is a very effective therapy. I've used it many times with great success in minimizing the amount of time to heal. R=Rest (Don't use the finger) I=Ice (Cold ice for 20-30m (as tolerated) every 2-4 hours) C=Compression (wrap the finger in a compressive sock or bandage; but make sure not to wrap it too tightly and cut all circulation. You can check this by pressing on the nail bed and pushing the blood out, then release and watch to see how long it takes to return. If capillary refill is 2 or 3 seconds, it is fine; but if it is longer or the finger starts to turn darker, release the dressing. E=Elevation (Keep the finger above the level of the heart to slow blood flow to the site) The goal is to minimize inflammation. Individual… [cont.]

What is the best treatment for a jammed/swollen finger?
Q. I jammed my finger playing football today, so i was wondering what the best response would've been: play through the pain, stop and wait, tug on it, ice, etc. All advice appreciated!
Asked by King AHM - Mon Nov 20 00:47:00 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Put ice on it, stabilizes it using a splint or taping it to the finger next to it, don't play through the pain, I would suggest giving it a few days rest to see if it improves. If it's really painful, you should consider going to a doctor for x-rays to make sure it isn't broken.

What is the best way to wrap your jammed finger?
Q. i jammed my pinky and i play basketball. how should i wrap it so i can play with little pain?
Asked by bballcutie11 - Wed Feb 27 18:26:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Use medical tape and wrap the jammed one and the finger next to it, which for you would be your ring finger. I've jammed so many toes and fingers! You can use pre-wrap before the medical tape, which is slightly more comfortable and safe for your skin. Unwrap and rewrap them every day for about a week or until the majority of the pain goes away, but then you need to start moving the joints and muscles again. If you still play, you will still have pain when it hits that finger. There isn't really a way to avoid it. Just ice it and take the recommended dosage of advil/IB Profene. If your team/school has a trainer, go see him/her and ask them to show you how to do it.

Q. I jammed my right ring finger really bad at gym today. It is swollen and hurts REALLY bad,how can I stop the pain and get it to bend more because I can only bend it to an certain point? and it also popped when the basket ball hit it,but i can still bend it a lil bit so im not really sure if its broken or not??

A. At this point, all you can really do is ice it to relieve the swelling and take tylenol or motrin (ibuprofen) for the pain. It'll be black and blue and swollen for a few days, and it'll hurt like heck, but then after the swelling and discoloration go down, you'll be able to pop it back into place.

How do i know if I jammed my finger or broke it?
Q. Yesterday, at my basketball game i got hit dead on the tip of my ring finger and theres a ring of bruising around my finger. It reallly hurts to bend and squeeze. Asked by Hayleigh W - Sat Jun 28 01:51:53 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Is the ring of bruising around the knuckle joint? If it is, it's probably broken especially since it hurts to bend or squeeze. I don't know if you were playing basketball as a school activity- if it was, when you go to the ER or doc let him know this and the school will be responsible to pay. You will need a hand x-ray which will tell where you broke your finger- if it is fractured- if the fracture is "aligned" which would mean they will just splint it and let it heal...if it's not aligned they will have to manipulate your finger, possibly under a sedative...you don't say your age but if you are 18 or younger, if the fracture is in the "growth plate" which is the end of every joint in your body, you can jeopardize the continued growth… [cont.]

How Do You Treat a Jammed Infected Finger?
Q. I recently jammed the tip of my pinkie finger and it hurts really bad, my mom said it looks infected, how do I treat this?
Asked by I Dont Know . - Sat May 16 09:40:16 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is hard to jam just the tip of your finger. Was it jammed or whacked/bumped? Is there an open cut? If there is, put OTC antibiotic cream and ice it. Just because it is red doesn't mean it is infected, just means it was bumped hard. If it is swollen ice it if it doesn't get better in a couple days see a doctor.

Just because it is red doesn't mean it is infected, just means it was bumped hard. If it is swollen ice it if it doesn't get better in a couple days see a doctor.

When will my jammed finger heal?
Q. Yesterday I jammed my pointer finger when playing basketball. I put ice on all day, and today I'm wearing a splint. It's still really swollen, and I'm just wondering about how long this will last for. Thanks!
