What is the best solution for a jammed finger?
Q. I play basketball a lot and I jammed my finger about 3 years ago. I thought it would heal itself but it is still swoll in the middle. I pull it all the time but it doesn't do anything. Should I splint it because I'm still actively playing and I dont feel like playing with a slint on my finger. Is there any other solution?

A. The only way to have it heal completely is to rest it, but that won't happen yet since you're active. To protect your finger, tape it up when you're playing. I think a split would hinder your play. When you're not playing, keep it splinted. You can take anti-inflammatory medicines like Advil. You could also ice your finger to prevent further swelling. This therapy is better than none.

How long does it take for a jammed finger to heal?
Q. About three months ago, I jammed a finger by trying to catch a bouncing spare-tire and it still hurts. Plus, it is easily reinjured. I can really feel it when "barring" strings on my guitar.

What's the difference between a jammed finger and having a hairline fractue?
Q. I jammed? my finger today swimming, and it's been incredibly painful. More so than any time I've jammed my finger. I can't straighten it or bend it without pain, and it's gone slightly purple on the side. I also can't put pressure on the finger (i'm typing without using that finger). I want to go get it checked out tomorrow, but I want to make sure i'm not over-reacting first. What do you guys think?

A. Fractures in fingers and toes are had to diagnose because the bones are small, and swelling may be hiding the full extent of the problem. I'd give it a day or two, and see if it improves.

What can I do for a jammed finger that never healed right?
Q. I jammed my finger a few months ago, it hasn't healed right, its crooked and the knuckle is swollen and it still hurts to bend it fully. I tried to splint it with taping it to the next finger when it happened but i was not able to do that while I was at work. Is there anything I can do for it without seeing a Dr. I don't have insurance at the moment.

A. The only way to fix it would be to rebreak it and set ir correctly, I would not reccomend doing this yourself. Wait until you have insurance and have a doctor do it for you.

How can I help my jammed finger?
Q. I play a lot of sports and I jammed my finger yesterday playing basketball. It is still pretty swollen and purple. What can I do to help it?
Asked by omegagirl101 - Mon Mar 9 17:07:55 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First of all, put a bunch of ice cubes in a bag and hold the bag against your finger for awhile. Second of all, I'd strongly reccommend putting it in a splint (you don't even have to go to a doctor to get one, I'm pretty sure you can buy one) just to keep the finger in place and hold it straight. You may think that its no big deal, but if you don't tape up your finger or use a splint your finger could permanently become a little crooked or swollen.

How to heal a swollen/jammed finger?
Q. Today in basketball practice i jammed my finger and it is a little swollen. How can i heal it and do you think it wont be sore by tomorrow or thursday?
Asked by arules235 - Tue Dec 2 22:35:42 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's likely to be sore for a week. You've probably torn some of your muscle and ruptured a few vessels. Put ice on it and try not to move it too much. I doubt it'll heal completely by thursday, but the swelling should be down by then (it'll still hurt to bend it and it probably won't bend very far).

What should I do about a jammed finger?
Q. Okay, so today at football, I caught a pass & I think my left hand's middle finger took most of the impact, and now, I think it's jammed. It's been roughly 2-3 hours, & I've applied ice to it already. I keep on trying to pull it, as hard as I can(I am afraid of dislocating it though), but I hear like a little crack sometimes. What can I do about this? My part of the finger, where it connects with my hand is really swollen. What do you suggest I do? Please help!

A. No, no, no, that is a very bad idea. keeping a finger or any injured part in gerneral on ice too long can produce frostbite and that is an even worse thing than a finger jammed. i suggest you ice it but for a short amount of time. like 10-15 mins.3 times a day. just dont ice it too long. Hope this helps.

Q. Hey! I am 15 years old and I think I jammed my finger. It happened a few days ago while I was playing Basketball. It still hurts a lot. I have tried ice but the swelling does not go down. I do not know what to do for it. Please help me.

A. If you can still move it, the chances of it being broken are very slim. so just simply take medical tape and tape it to the finger beside it. ice it whenever you get the chance, it will help. just keep it moving, not a lot but dont not move it, it makes it worse.. if you dont move it you lose it, atleast thats what my doctor said once .

What is the best thing to do for a jammed pinky finger?
Q. My son jammed his pinky finger, and it is causing him some pain. We iced it and gave him some Advil, and that helped. But, he has four baseball games this week, and would like to be able to play. Do you think this injury will hurt his game? He is a great player, one of the best on his team, and is worried that he will not be able to play up to his potential this week. Do you have any good ideas to speed up the healing process? Thanks in advance for your answers.

A. "RICE" is a very effective therapy. I've used it many times with great success in minimizing the amount of time to heal. R=Rest (Don't use the finger) I=Ice (Cold ice for 20-30m (as tolerated) every 2-4 hours) C=Compression (wrap the finger in a compressive sock or bandage; but make sure not to wrap it too tightly and cut all circulation. You can check this by pressing on the nail bed and pushing the blood out, then release and watch to see how long it takes to return. If capillary refill is 2 or 3 seconds, it is fine; but if it is longer or the finger starts to turn darker, release the dressing. E=Elevation (Keep the finger above the level of the heart to slow blood flow to the site) The goal is to minimize inflammation. Individual… [cont.]

I jammed my finger playing basketball and want to know if its broken?
Q. I jammed my finger and the Nail is all purple and near the finger not the tip but the other side it is like chipped my mum told me it would fall off and my nail would have to grow out. Its been like this for about a month now. Its got a big lump before it gets to the fingernail too.
Asked by Brian958 - Fri Jun 12 06:54:14 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If its constant pain it is a break that didn't heal right. If there is only pain sometime it is probably a sprain that didn't heal. Either way you need to see a doctor so they can get the bones in the right positions.

A. taping them together for a few days is a good idea, apply ice for twenty minutes (no longer) every couple of hours, take Ibuprofen for the antiinflammatory benefits, and keep your hand elevated above your heart as much as you can. After three or four days try taking the tape off and gently flexing the fingers, if there is still great pain with movement, time to see a doctor for an xray.

A. Ive jammed almost all my fingers as a younger child. I never treated any of them, and now my fingers are all crooked and dont point straight. If you dont correct the jammed finger it will continue to grow in the awkward position it is in. Because i never treated my jammed fingers, my fingers dont point straight, also I have a very larger ring size to accomadate the extra twists and bends in my fingers..yikes.. its much better for the long run if u treat ur jammed fingers! Trust me.! Good luck! Tape your finger to your middle finger and ice it!
