How long does it take a new garbage disposal to rust? after 6 months it broke and is rusty. was I duped?
Q. On May 10 I had what was supposed to be a brand new Whirlaway 984 garbage disposal installed by a professional plumber. It has a 10 year warranty. After 6 months a piece broke off and it doesn't work anymore. The piece is very rusty. Does new equipment like this rust that fast? My concern is this: Was an "old/used" garbage disposal installed and I paid for a new one? This would be consumer fraud, if that is the case. Or is it common for garbage disposal parts to rust that fast?
Asked by Concerned Consumer - Fri Nov 17 11:31:38 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Did you actually see the new disposal and then see it put in. I installed about a thousand of these and know of people in the business that would take an old one out and put it in a rental unit. A new one was put in a house for sale. Or, ask the plumber back, show him what you found, if you have a ten year warranty, get another one. Keep the B.B.B. on the line though.

A. run hot water and dish soap down the drain and run the disposal at the same time. If that doesn't work try the same thing with bleach. bleach will kill just about any odor.

What to do with a clogged sink, garbage disposal not working and dishwasher flooding?
Q. Help! I have a dual kitchen sink with a garbage disposal. Recently the garbage disposal stopped working and now the sink won't drain on the disposal side. The other side drains fine but the dishwasher will not drain either! The garbage disposal won't even turn on anymore. We stuck our hands in there and pulled out broken glass (grrr at whoever put broken glass in my sink and let it go down the drain!). I really can't afford a plumber and needless to say, I have no idea what to do and where to start. Is there a simple troubleshooting way to begin to figure out the problem that can be used by someone as clueless as me? By the way, I really don't know if I would be able to manage taking anything apart...maybe there is an easy way that someone… [cont.]

A. Very easy to fix pending on your unit ( more then likely its a ISE disposal ) Under then unit in the middle there is a hole for a alan wrench (you ahould have recived 1 with the unit) 1st Unplug unit 2nd insert alan wrench and turn back and forth (counter clock wise and so on) this makes the motor and blades move to free the jam up. 3rd plug unit in and see if it works. 4th If unit seems to have no power under the unit there is a reset switch red button push it in to reset the power. The reason your water is stopped up is the unit is blocked up with glass and food and the dishwasher is hooked to the unit so it wont drain either. (( You can try this be carefull )) unplug unit!!! get a flashlight and a wet/dry vac Look in unit and try to… [cont.]

How do I replace a garbage disposal with regular piping?
Q. I have a garbage disposal that don't work. I think the motor is burnt out. I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it was to just take the disposal out and replace it with regular pipe. Is this something that I could do myself or would I have to hire a plumber. Any advice would be a big help. Thanks in advance to all who will take time to pass their advice on.

A. Garbage disposals are detrimental to the sewer system, garbage belongs in the garbage can, many local authorities have banned their replacement, if you want to keep taxes down, it costs to treat everything that goes into the drain. First, shut off the electric, if you can't, forget about doing the job. Open the box where the wire enters the disposal, disconnect the wires and place wire nuts and electrical tape over them. Cut the pipe that leads to the wall, just after the u-shaped bend. Support the disposal, Hit the ring at the top of the disposal, counterclockwise, or put a screwdriver into one of the loops and twist. Take the back end of the pipe you cut off the u-bend[trap], to the home store and ask for a Fernco fitting to attach the… [cont.]

Is there anything to put in my garbage disposal to get rid of the smell?
Q. I have a fairly new garbage disposal in my kitchen sink, but it's getting really smelly! I didn't experience this with my old garbage disposal. Is there any sort of cleaner I can put in there that will take the smell out?
Asked by CM - Mon Jul 23 20:08:27 2007 - - 21 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Run cold water for about a minute...turn on garbage disposal & run constantly...slowly add 1 then a second lemon...wait until completely chopped up then add a large bowl of ice cubes. The lemon freshens & the cubes clean off the blades. If you have put greasy items down the disposal just add about a 1/4 cup Dawn Dishwashing Liquid when you add the lemons to cut the grease & get rid of residue. I do this about once a month & my disposal stays fresh & clean smelling! Follow this & you should never have a problem again.

Can you install a garbage disposal in a sink that doesn't have one?
Q. I live in an older apartment building. Assuming the permission of my landlord, would it be possible to install a garbage disposal in the sink if there isn't one already? We do have a dishwasher, and the kitchen area looks pretty new. The bathroom plumbing, however, is original 1940s, so I'm not sure exactly what my limitations are. Any help would be appreciated.

A. The size of the drain is very important. If the plumbing is really old it may not fit Most newer sinks can have a disposal hooked to them. You also need to think about where your going to pull the electric from and where the switch will go. I would be surprised if the landlord will let you do all this.

What is the correct way to put a rubber garbage disposal gasket?
Q. There is a leak coming from my garbage disposal where the discharge tube connects. I got a new disposal gasket but I'm trying to figure out if I put the narrow side towards the garbage disposal or towards the discharge tube? I tried looking at my old gasket; however, it's so corroded I cant even tell.

A. The narrow part of the gasket goes toward the disposer and the large flat side goes against the discharge tube.

A. mine stinks too...there is cleaner you can buy (near the dish soap at Wal Martt)...or try putting pieces of lemon down there and turning the disposal on. Also, I read 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/2 c white vinegar have a chemical reaction that cleans it out, haven't tried it yet.

How do you clean plastic out of a garbage disposal?
Q. One of my guests the other night accidentally hit the switch and turned on the garbage disposal and a plastic ice cream scoop fell in it. How do I clean it out so I can run the disposal again?
Asked by LuvMyAutisticSon - Mon Jun 11 11:12:15 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You will have to remove the disposer. First disconnect the power to the disposer, Then remove the drain pipe. You will probably want to use some type of drainpan to catch the water as it might be nasty, and you may have to loosen other drain connections as well to have the slack necessary to remove the drain from the disposer. There should be a locking ring at the point where the disposer meets the sink. Turn this to unlock the disposer from the sink. Use a large screw driver and turn left to loosen. Be sure to support the disposer to avoid dropping it when the weight is suddenly released when the ring is turned, you may need another person to help (don't ask your young ones and they are not strong enought). once you have the diposer off… [cont.]

A. Good site shown by Oil Field Trash. It could be in the discharge tube or the P-trap. I would just remove the P-trap as it is compression fittings that you can either remove with your hands or using channel lock pliers and unclog it there. The discharge tube is sometimes a straight length before it hits the p-trap - that's where my clogs always occur.

Is an in-sink garbage disposal enviornmentally friendly?
Q. I live in an apartment so I don't have a yard for compost and I don't have any place for the soil from an indoor composter. I know it is bad to throw away organic waist and that it makes methane gas but what about my garbage disposal? Does this waist wind up in the land fill too? I live in a good community (Lawrence, KS) so I think they have good waist practices but I have no real clue.
Asked by lizard S - Thu Jul 3 16:19:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Garbage disposals are some of the worst things to have. I know we all thought they were great when they first came out. Now think about how much harm they do...first off the organic matter usually ends up clogging the pipes. You have to run a lot of water ( good fresh water at that ) down the sink to help flush out disposal...then once this garbage...if it all makes it to waste water plant has to be treated and filtered...causing more work and more chemicals to break it down. Best thing to do is place any unwanted or wasted food ( garbage ) in the trash that can to be hauled away...that way you are saving 100's of gallon of fresh water from going down the drain.

How do you unclog a kitchen sink drain with a garbage disposal?
Q. I have a kitchen sink with a garbage disposal. The garbage disposal still works and spins around but it leaves about an inch of water behind. It is clogged with bread crumbs. A. Dear Breadpaste, Physical removal or waiting for the material to rot sounds like your options. Do you own a wet/dry shop vacuum? ( by the way, white bread is just as hard for YOU to digest )

Where can I buy garbage disposal fizzies?
Q. I am looking for the "fizzies" that you put in your garbage disposal to clean it out and make it smell fresh. I was at a party of some sort- At Home America? Tastefully Simple?- not too long ago and thought I saw them there. I can't remember now and can't find them. The ones that I am referring to were more of an upscale brand and came in a variety of scents. I do use baking soda and have use lemon/orange peel. Just trying to remember the brand that I saw demo of and was hoping someone could jog my memory.
Asked by Jen - Wed Apr 25 09:25:12 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know about "fizzies" but I use a bit of baking soda, followed by vinegar. It "fizzes" just like in science class when you were a kid, and cleans out your drains as well. It is an environmentally friendly way to keep your drains running without harsh drain cleaners. I use it in all my drains occasionally to keep them clear. Also, a bit of lemon or orange peel in the disposal makes for a nice clean scent.

How do I remove a stuck hex wrench from a garbage disposal?
Q. My well meaning husband, while trying to get a penny unstuck from the garbage disposal, used a hex wrench in the bottom (which I know is the correct thing to do). However, when he went to test the disposal to see if it was working again, he did not remove the hex wrench, and it is now locked into the bottom, and will not come out. The wrench still can be turned, and it twists the disposal, but it seems seriously locked into the bottom. Any help?
Asked by Vera - Mon May 17 12:40:33 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Use a broom handle or a good wooden stick to jam the disposal from turning, with power off of course, and turn the wrench back and forth with a downward motion. If this doesn't work use a pry between the wrench body and the disposal and pry it out. Good Luck The wrench hex or the disposal hex groves may be damaged, stripped.

Egg shells were sent down the garbage disposal and have now clogged the drain. How do I fix this?

Asked by Texanole - Wed Apr 19 12:55:42 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I seriously doubt it was just the egg shells that clogged the drain. More than likely is was a bunch of grease combined with some fiberous material and the eggs. Use a plunger to break up the clog. If your disposal doesn't work, try resetting the thermal overload button (usually on the bottom of the disposal unit under the sink).

How to remove a screw jammed in the garbage disposal?
Q. Our garbage disposal stopped working a couple of days ago and when we checked it we found a small screw jammed between the disk that slides around with the blades on it and the side. No amount of tugging, screwing, forcing will help. Were just girls and have no idea how to handle this and are not really interested in callinga plummer. Whats the best way to fix this. We have tried using the Allen wrench at the bottom but that just makes the disk grind against it. Any ideas?
Asked by rhendessa - Mon Jun 9 00:20:47 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. make sure that the unit is disconnected from the power.. and using a pair of long needle nose pliers, grab on to the screw as someone else turns the motor from the bottom with the allen wrench.. even if it grinds a little. pull on the screw as the unit is being turned.. wiggle tug whatever.. if the unit stopped working due to this screw then grinding wont make a difference. after you remove the screw, press on the reset button which should be on the bottom of the unit.. black or red button just push it in. then plug the unit back into the outlet and try it. a little grinding wont cause any problem.. if it doesn't work, then it was most likely due to the motor burning out when the screw first got caught.

New dishwasher installed, now garbage disposal doesn't work?
Q. Yea! New dishwasher!!...but then I noticed that the garbage disposal fails to run when the switch is flicked. I believe the dishwasher also has a disposal. Did the installer accidentally disconnect the one for our sink, or is it not possible to have both operational? Ok, we feel dumb. We just pushed on the plug and it looks like it had come out slightly. It works now. Thanks for your help!

A. Check under the sink to see if the installer unplugged the disposal or if it has a GFI outlet that may have tripped. Dishwashers have what is sometimes referred to as disposal/food grinder, but it is only for stuff left on dishes
