A. you need to remove the trap under the sink and clean out the debris and clog. It's a messy job so have buckets and towels and rubber gloves. or call a plumber.

My garbage disposal has started to drain into my bathtub on the lower level. Any ideas why?
Q. I live in a two 1/2 story house with my kitchen on the top floor and the master bedroom on the lower floor. Yesterday, my garbage disposal contents started coming up in the drain of the bathtub. Any idea why this happened and what I can do to fix it? We have no other plumbing issues in the house that I can see.

A. run hot water and dish soap down the drain and run the disposal at the same time. If that doesn't work try the same thing with bleach. bleach will kill just about any odor.

How do I replace a garbage disposal with regular piping?
Q. I have a garbage disposal that don't work. I think the motor is burnt out. I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it was to just take the disposal out and replace it with regular pipe. Is this something that I could do myself or would I have to hire a plumber. Any advice would be a big help. Thanks in advance to all who will take time to pass their advice on.

A. Garbage disposals are detrimental to the sewer system, garbage belongs in the garbage can, many local authorities have banned their replacement, if you want to keep taxes down, it costs to treat everything that goes into the drain. First, shut off the electric, if you can't, forget about doing the job. Open the box where the wire enters the disposal, disconnect the wires and place wire nuts and electrical tape over them. Cut the pipe that leads to the wall, just after the u-shaped bend. Support the disposal, Hit the ring at the top of the disposal, counterclockwise, or put a screwdriver into one of the loops and twist. Turn Garbage Disposal on and sometimes water comes out of adjoining sink?
Q. I was trying to clean my garbage disposal and I put the stopper on and filled it with hot soapy water. Then I turned the disposal on and removed the stopper, the water started going down but dirty water started to come up from the adjoining sink. I had noticed that sometimes when i turned the disposal on i would see water swirling around in the other sink but it never came up so much. Is this something I need to call the plumber about or should I pour drano down the adjoining sink? Thanks for your input!

What to do with a clogged sink, garbage disposal not working and dishwasher flooding?
Q. Help! I have a dual kitchen sink with a garbage disposal. Recently the garbage disposal stopped working and now the sink won't drain on the disposal side. We stuck our hands in there and pulled out broken glass (grrr at whoever put broken glass in my sink and let it go down the drain!). I really can't afford a plumber and needless to say, I have no idea what to do and where to start. Is there a simple troubleshooting way to begin to figure out the problem that can be used by someone as clueless as me? Very easy to fix pending on your unit ( more then likely its a ISE disposal ) Under then unit in the middle there is a hole for a alan wrench (you ahould have recived 1 with the unit) 1st Unplug unit 2nd insert alan wrench and turn back and forth (counter clock wise and so on) this makes the motor and blades move to free the jam up. 3rd plug unit in and see if it works. 4th If unit seems to have no power under the unit there is a reset switch red button push it in to reset the power. The reason your water is stopped up is the unit is blocked up with glass and food and the dishwasher is hooked to the unit so it wont drain either. Q. I have a dual sided kitchen sink with a garbage disposal. Either side of the sink will slowly fill when I run the water and will drain extremely slowly. If I turn the garbage disposal on (which seems to be running fine) The water bubbles up and fills into the other side of the sink.

Is there a way to fix the garbage disposal if the leak is coming from the reset button?
Q. Our garbage disposal stopped working after a disposal dishtowel got caught in it. After several attempts to free the jam, water started leaking from the sides of the disposal. We tightened the screws around the sides. Now, the sides are no longer leaking but it's leaking from the reset button! We called the manufacturer and they said "Sorry, get a new one." but I'm not one to give up so easily. Does anyone know how (or if) this can be fixed?

A. It will be easier to spend $55.00 to buy a new one than to go threw the trouble of fixing the old one.

How do you fix your garbage disposal system?
Q. Whenever I turn on the garbage disposal it doesn't work at all. The water in the sink gets backed up as well. I tried using some chemical product that is supposed to clean out all the pipe clogs but it obviously didn't work. I'd rather fix it on my own then call somebody because it's expensive! With Christmas coming up I don't have a lot of money to blow on a repairman. It's not a necessity so it can wait but I'd like to fix it on my own if at all possible.

A. It should have a reset button on the bottom. Feel around for it and push that in. It should work after that. If not, you may need to replace it. It is pretty easy to do and the box helps with instructions.

To have a garbage disposal under your sink, do you need an outlet or just wires for electricity?
Q. I am going to have a garbage disposal installed, but I don't have a dishwasher or outlet under my sink. Would all I need is a new 120v dedicated circuit outlet under my sink for electricity and the person will be able to install it? A. Installing and outlet is a good idea. You will install the switch in series with the outlet. You can switch just one outlet on the duplex or both. It's cheap and easy to do. The hard part is fishing the wire from the panel. Check this link. This diagram is showing how to have both outlets on the duplex switched. This is a schematic diagram so obviously it't not going to look like this because you are running Romex, but electrically this is it. It probably best to run the Romex from the panel to the receptacle first. Then run anthother Romex from that box to the switch box. You will have to wire nut the hot leg from the panel in the receptacle box and hook it to one side of the switch. The other side of the switch will go to… [cont.]

Q. A man at home depot told me to dump vinegar down the garbage disposal, and then run it through after a bit. A. Good site shown by Oil Field Trash. It could be in the discharge tube or the P-trap. I would just remove the P-trap as it is compression fittings that you can either remove with your hands or using channel lock pliers and unclog it there. The discharge tube is sometimes a straight length before it hits the p-trap - that's where my clogs always occur.

A. Oh my. That's a new one. I'd start by pulling the P trap from between the disposal and the wall. Have a bucket underneath to catch whatever falls out. Clean the trap with a brush. Hopefully the trouble is there. If not, the paint may have dried in the disposal itself, which is a bit more of a hassle. Try to clean the drain of the disposal, where it went into the P trap you just took off. If there is no paint there, hand auger the pipe going into the wall. Then file a claim in small claims court.

A. Garbage disposals are a waste water treatment plants nightmare. I used to work for my city and our civil engineer hated garbage disposals. Your flushing a great deal more solid waste into the waste water system. I honestly can't remember the science behind it, its been too long ago but I do remember its not good. Also if your on a septic system and you use your disposal you fill up your tank with solids alot faster and if they leak into your drain field and can clog your lines.

Why is my garbage disposal waste ending up in my automatic dishwasher?
Q. I live in a two bedroom apartment. When I use my garbage disposal the liquid waste is backing up into my automatic dishwasher. Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how do I fix it?

A. The flexible waste tube from the dishwasher to the disposal needs to be hooked over or attached to a hook under the counter top. This will prevent it from siphoning back into the dishwasher. You can do it yourself or call the landlord.
