How to get laptop to see desktop and its resources?
Q. I bought a laptop and am trying to make it so that I can share files between the desktop and the laptop, and also print from the laptop directly to the printer that's connected to the desktop. I had a working LAN already with the printer sharing working fine. Here is the setup: A cable modem, connected to a linksys router, which has wifi enabled but also is connected via ethernet cable to the desktop PC (windows xp). The laptop (Vista) can connect to the wireless network just fine but cannot see the desktop and therefore use any of its resources. The router assigns IPs to both comps just fine w/ dhcp and both comps can get online. Just can't talk to each other for some reason.

A. What you'll need to do is download "Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder" to your comp that has XP. That is the only way you'll get the two comps to network together. Here's the link for the download: Overview This package contains the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

How can I connect my Desktop computer to my laptop computer?
Q. I want to connect my old desktop computer to my laptop, so that I can access all of the file on both of the computers. Can I do this by taking the cord that connects my monitor to my desktop computer? I've heard that I could take my ethernet cord and plug it into my laptop and my desktop, will that work? I want to try to avoid wireless networking, but if that's my only option I'd like to hear about that one too. Thanks.
Asked by pro1 - Sat Dec 27 10:06:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The easiest way is to by a Ethernet Router and connect an ethernet cable to each PC. You do not have to have a conection to the internet to do this. You should then be able to see the other machine using the "My Network Places" button. However to see the files you need to "share" the Harddrive to the network. You do this by "Right hand clicking" on the drive or folder you wish to share and select Sharing and Security and follow the prompts.

A. RDP, (Remote Desktop Portal), works on a server client model. The PC you are remoting is the server, while you are on the client. You are connecting to your "server" or remote computer using the microsoft terminal services client. You can initiate this by typing mstsc from your run command and typing in the remote machines IP or FQDN. This will connect you to that PC in a fully virtual environment. To everyone else, it will look as your screen is locked, to you it will look like you are actually using your other PC. To enable remote connections, right click my computer and then "remote" tab. Check both options. Both client and server have to be on the same network. And I disagree, its not slow at all, it is free, and there are no… [cont.]

What is a very good desktop streaming tool that I can get with desktop audio streaming?
Q. I would like to stream my desktop and the sound from my desktop to the internet on a Windows 7 64 bit system. I want to avoid just routing the headphone jack into the mic jack, and I would like the screencap to be decent enough to watch a movie on it. Any suggestions?

A. I recommend 1AVStreamer. Quality of video and sound can go as high as your bandwidth can stand. And it is easy to setup.

How to disable a window with desktop folders from opening at startup on Vista?
Q. Each time I start my computer, a window opens looking like the control panel but has the word desktop on the address bar and all the folders of my desktop. I want to know how to disable this annoying window from opening each time. It's similar to the welcome screen. On the bottom of the screen to the right of the start button the window is named desktop. How do I stop it from starting up each time I start my computer?

A. Hello Can you please, do this first: click on START button (bottom left corner- window logo) Click on all programs scroll down to a folder called startup open it and look to see if anything is inside, if the folder that keeps opening up is inside then... right click, DELETE. This will only delete the action not the actual Folder.

Now I don't have wireless internet since I don't remember the authorization code (?) to connect to my wireless internet (I had saved the code on my desktop). A. there are two solutions for you. 1. use a pin to reset your router back to factory setting and reconfigure it. 2. get a linux LiveCD Distro such as Puppy Linux ( approx. 128MB), download it, burn it to a cd-r, reboot the compuer, load into Puppy, mount the Harddrives/partitions, locate the file with your wireless info.

A. Well there are a LOT of variable's to this question but I'll do my best, assuming you already have a home network set up. First you need to go to the folder that holds your music, the one you want to share. Right click on it and select properties, there is a tab on the box that opens up called "sharing" click on this tab and click on the box that says "share this folder". Click OK, or apply and exit out of there. Next, go to your laptop and open up "my network places", you should see the folder you just shared out located there if you have a home network that is set up. I hope this works, based on the limited information that's the best I can do. If it doesn't, let us know what kind of network you are using, what operating systems… [cont.]

A. remote desktop is a tool that is used for help. for instance you can be having trouble with your pc, and using remote desktop someone can connect to your pc and have total control over your computer so they can fix the problem. So unless you use this or know how to use it, I wouldn't take the update. Would just be a waste of space and the version you have is probably good enough if you ever did need to use it.

How to do I stop sharing Desktop Icons with all users on Windows XP?
Q. My computer has two users on it. When I'm on my user account and add a desktop icon to my desktop, it appears on the other user's desktop as well. When it gets deleted from the other user's desktop, it disappears off of mine! How do I stop sharing desktop icons with other users, meaning they only appear on my desktop and not another user's? By the way, my account is password protected, just in case that's important.

A. Assuming you have 2 separate accounts then they only way you would share icon's is if they are put into the all users desktop space. Check c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop to see if it is there. To be non-shared it needs to be in c:\documents and settings\\desktop

A. There are three key parts to a wireless internet connection: 1. A modem. This is the device that will connect to your ISP (or Internet Service Provider -- the people who you are paying to serve you with internet connectivity). High speed internet modems can be DSL (using a phone line), Cable (using a coaxial connection to your television provider), Satellite (using a coaxial connection to your Satellite Internet dish), or Wireless (connecting over-air to a provider such as Clearwire). 2. A router. This is the device that your computers will use to connect, wirelessly, with each other and with the modem. You will want to set this up with some sort of security; the most commonly used is a WEP key, which is just a 32 (or more) character… [cont.]

Asked by cactus - Tue Nov 25 22:07:12 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Because the internal components (as they are the same), are very different. The components for the laptop are meant to very compact and fast. The physical size and its pin configuration are different for both, the more compact is made for the laptop. The desktop is also very easily upgradable, whereas the laptop is not (just get a new one...)

Is it possible to replace a desktop hard drive with a laptop hard drive?
Q. My desktop hard drive failed and is not in computer heaven. :( But I have a laptop that is unable to charge but the hard drive is perfectly fine. Is it possible to take the laptop hard drive and put inside the desktop? Obviously I wouldn't be able to do it, but could a technician do it?

A. Typically a laptop hard drive will not be compatible with a desktop computer. If it WAS compatible, and you could get a technician to mount it, then yes, you could. But in generally, you will not be able to do this.
