How to share a desktop printer with a laptop in the same network?
Q. I have desktop computer that has a printer plugged into it. The desktop runs Windows XP. I also have a laptop that runs Windows Vista. I have a wireless router connected to the desktop so I can connect my laptop to the internet, but can I wirelessly print things off my laptop? My husband uses the desktop for school and I use the laptop for work and I'd rather not have to keep switching the plugs around.

A. all you need is something called a "switch" or "ethernet switch", and extra cat6 cables. Simply plug the cable that was running to your PC into one of the ports on the switch (they usually have something like 5) then all you do is run cables from the switch to your PC and laptop, and viola, internet on both :)

How do I get my desktop background to shuffle through pictures automatically?
Q. A friend of mine has a Macbook and for his desktop background, he has a specific folder that he can put pictures into and then every few minutes, his desktop background would change automatically to a picture from that folder. I was wondering if there is a program out there that I could install on Windows that would shuffle through my pictures and display them randomly on my Windows desktop? I'm running Vista and I think that it'd be awesome if there is a program that could do something like that. Any help would be appreciated!

How to disable a window with desktop folders from opening at startup on Vista?
Q. Each time I start my computer, a window opens looking like the control panel but has the word desktop on the address bar and all the folders of my desktop. I want to know how to disable this annoying window from opening each time. It's similar to the welcome screen. On the bottom of the screen to the right of the start button the window is named desktop. How do I stop it from starting up each time I start my computer?

A. Hello Can you please, do this first: click on START button (bottom left corner- window logo) Click on all programs scroll down to a folder called startup open it and look to see if anything is inside, if the folder that keeps opening up is inside then... right click, DELETE. This will only delete the action not the actual Folder.

How to connect my desktop to my laptop to see the desktop's contents?
Q. I have a desktop and a laptop. How can I connect my desktop to the laptop so that laptop's screen depicts the contents of the desktop? By the way, i don't want to do it through the internet - it is just that the monitor that I was using for my desktop got broken and now I want to use my laptop as a monitor (screen) for my desktop.
Asked by dolempap - Tue Aug 4 23:24:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You can't use the laptop as a monitor for the desktop. However, if you can borrow a monitor for a little while you can install LogMeIn on the desktop and then access it from the laptop. Note that this does go over the internet, but it's the only easy way to do what you need to do.

Q. Hi, I'm looking to start a small online business personalizing invitations, announcements, labels, etc. I am not a graphic designer but I am very creative hence the reason for this venture. What programs can I use for creating these types of products that is inexpensive to start with and does not require me to go back to school for desktop publishing? Also, do you know of any printers who work with small business owners for these types of products?

A. The most likely cause is a bloated registry which has become the home for all kinds of useless bits and pieces of data. Whenever any change is made to the system settings or a program is installed or uninstalled, a new entry is generated in the registry. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There is a multitude of useless bits and pieces to be removed.Parts of uninstalled programs, parts of incompletely installed programs, dead drivers and many other things. clean your registry and remove all the useless data fragments and no longer needed information to fix the freeze error! I should like to commend Registry Easy to you ! You can try ! Good luck!

A. Well there are a LOT of variable's to this question but I'll do my best, assuming you already have a home network set up. First you need to go to the folder that holds your music, the one you want to share. Right click on it and select properties, there is a tab on the box that opens up called "sharing" click on this tab and click on the box that says "share this folder". Click OK, or apply and exit out of there. Next, go to your laptop and open up "my network places", you should see the folder you just shared out located there if you have a home network that is set up. I hope this works, based on the limited information that's the best I can do. If it doesn't, let us know what kind of network you are using, what operating systems… [cont.]

What's the difference between having a desktop on your desk and having a laptop on your desk?
Q. Someone told me that laptops were the "new wave" of the future of computer technology. What's the difference between having a huge desktop attached to a printer on your desk or a laptop attached to a printer on your desk? What can you do with a laptop (besides carry it everywhere) that you can't do with a desktop and vice versa? What are the advantages to owning just a laptop instead of a bulky desktop?
Asked by chrstnwrtr - Thu Jul 31 00:51:32 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well to put it in simple terms Descriptions Desktops-Bulky and a pain to carry around with monitor and accessories Laptops-Easy to Carry Around. Usually a little more expensive. Everything attached to it Life Span Desktop 5-8 Years Laptops 2-3 Desktops are designed to take a beating and go through some damage, Parts are easily replaceable if things break. Laptops are tightly compact and usually will start to Overheat overtime. The Industries have not perfected the design of them I'm not saying do not get one (They are great for vacations and college students) But if it is something for your home I do recommend keeping a desktop seeing that they are cheaper and more durable and last a lot longer.

A. Yes it is the same...the only thing different is a desktop sits on the desk or floor or anywhere whereas a laptop is portable! Both would be personal computers whereas would be different if it was a buisness or office computer.

What is the best desktop replacement laptop?
Q. My priorities are performance, durability, and a price range of $2k max. I do not care how portable the laptop is, in fact, the more "bulky" it is, the better (used in home as a desktop replacement) I do not want a Mac or a notebook made of plastic (OK maybe real tough plastic). Performance - I'm planning to work on multimedia/gaming, so I need the fastest laptop under $2000 that is fairly tough. Any suggestions?

If you enjoyed playing with Stellarium, the open-source planetarium software we shared with you earlier this year, but felt strangely tied to an earth-bound perspective, you'll definitely want to fly through space with Celestia.
